Special Educational Needs (SEND)

In Carlton & Faceby CE (VA) and Bilsdale Midcable Chop Gate (VC) School we operate a policy of inclusion.  All children will have entitlement and access to every aspect of schooling and the work embodied within the National Curriculum.  Furthermore, we accept that it is our duty to modify the work within the school to match an individual child’s needs and abilities.

What do we mean by Special Education Needs?

From time to time a child may find it harder to learn at school than other children of a similar age.  Conversely, in the case of gifted pupils, they may find work considerably easier.  If we assess a child as having SEN (at either end of the spectrum) the child’s parents/carers will be informed immediately and from this point they are kept fully informed about developments relating to their child.  We want to work in partnership with all parents/carers; particularly in the case of children with SEN where close co-operation is invaluable.

Usually the needs of a child will be met through the provision of a modified curriculum i.e. a specially designed individual learning programme (IEP). Sometimes provision is by the allocation of:

  • Assistance from a teaching assistant
  • Specific assistance allocated by the LA

In the early stages we try to meet all needs from resources within the school.  Occasionally we may feel that it would be beneficial to seek advice or support from the county’s Pupil Support Services.  Should this be deemed appropriate this would only be sought after discussions with parents or carers.

SENCO

The schools have a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) whose job is to liaise with all personnel who may be involved with any child who attends our school.

SEND – Local Offer

All North Yorkshire maintained schools have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND.)   They are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all pupils, whatever their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school.   The Local Authority publishes its Local Offer which provides information for children and young people with special educational needs (SEND) and their parents or carers in a single place.
