Attachment Aware Schools

Bilsdale Midcable Chop Gate and Carlton & Faceby C. E. Primary Schools are both Attachment Aware learning communities.

We are committed to supporting each other to develop best practice in addressing everyone’s attachment needs. We believe that the best place to start addressing mental health and wellbeing is with the attachment relationship between adult and child.

We support everyone’s attachment needs by:

  • Ensuring that our staff are ‘Trauma Aware’ and understand the possible implications of Trauma histories
  • Promoting inclusion and preventing exclusion
  • Developing effective strategies to support children and adults
  • Ensuring that strategies are developed with and are delivered consistently by the whole team around the child
  • Using rewards and consequences that are proportionate and that are situated within a relational style of working, whilst recognising the risks of the inappropriate use of rewards and sanctions
  • Not recommending or supporting any strategies that utilise fear, shame, isolation, or that humiliate children and young people
  • Providing high quality training for everyone in our setting
  • Working safely and with supervision
  • Engaging in action research methodologies to develop broader knowledge bases and skill development
  • Sharing our learning with the wider NYCC Attachment community

We have engaged with bespoke whole-school core training that covers:

  • Auditing the school’s current understanding and identifying the training and support needed
  • Attachment theory
  • Trauma, Developmental Trauma and Secondary Trauma
  • Neuroscience
  • Building a positive internal working model
  • Loss
  • Sensory integration
  • Polyvagal theory
